Now for Something New
October 26, 2018
Yep, it’s been a long time since I posted. Sorry about that. This Summer passed as quickly as ever up here in Minnesota. Like everyone else, I could use another 6 months to get ready for Winter.
Our Summer CSA season is winding down. Just 1 more delivery in November and it’s complete. The Mahtomedi farmers market ended back in September and Saturday October 27 is the last day of the season for the Stillwater farmers market. Our hay is made and we are getting the farm ready for winter. It’s been a good season and plans are well underway for next year. While the farm doesn’t sleep, it certainly slows down.
But I said something new…
We are going to be in the White Bear Lake Winter market November 10.
Our daughter got engaged to a wonderful young man with a fantastic family.
Of course we have several young calves
Sign-up for our Winter CSA will begin soon. Should have been up already but it’s not.
We have a new flock of 60 laying hens and an expanded coop to handle them.
We are being featured in a post on “Forks in the Dirt” in November. Thanks Michelle!
Not exciting enough? Let me see, there was something else…
PIGS!
Yep, you heard me right. We have added pigs to the farm and will be offering pork through our CSA and in the farmers markets. They are currently at our partner farm Thistledown Farm but will likely come home in December or January. We purchased 2 Mangalitsa (or Mangalica if you prefer) sows and they have a total of 7 piglets. The Sows look like fuzzy clouds so they are named Nimbus and Cumulus. We will be adding more traditional breeds of weened pigs in December as well in preparation for the summer demand. Roberta and I attended a 2 day, information packed seminar with Joel Salatin and Jordan Green on Pastured Pork.
Yep, things are always changing on the farm and it’s not just the seasons.
Until next time – Live Well,
The Guy with the Hat.
